Synopsis
From Ground Zero is a compelling project that brings together 22 short films created by talented filmmakers from Gaza. Launched by Rashid Masharawi, a renowned Palestinian filmmaker, and organized by the Mashawari Fund for films and filmmakers in Gaza, the initiative was born against the backdrop of conflict and aims to provide a platform for young artists to express themselves through their craft.
Each film, ranging in length from 3 to 6 minutes, presents a unique perspective on the current reality in Gaza. The project captures the diverse experiences of life in the Palestinian enclave, including the challenges, tragedies and moments of resilience faced by its people. Using a mix of genres including fiction, documentary, docu-fiction, animation and experimental cinema, From Ground Zero presents a rich diversity of stories that reflect the sorrow, joy and hope inherent in Gazan life. Despite the harsh filming conditions, Gaza’s vibrant artistic scene shines through this collection, offering an intimate and powerful portrait of daily life and the enduring spirit of its people.
From Ground Zero marked its official world premiere at the Amman International Film Festival. The project was initially expected to be shown at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, but was then pulled. Masharawi then led a protest screening in the French resort town with no official backing from Cannes.

THE DIRECTOR
The producer Rashid Masharawi is a self-taught filmmaker born and raised in a Gaza Strip refugee camp. He is one of the first Palestinian directors to shoot movies in the occupied territories. All his films, starting with his first feature, Curfew (1990), and then Haifa (1996), which was the first Palestinian movie officially selected at Cannes, receive regular international selections, awards, and broadcasting. They reflect, with irony, daily Palestinian life, and they are studied in many universities.
In 1996, he founded the Cinema Production and Distribution Center to develop Palestinian cinema through workshops, training, a children's festival, and mobile cinema. Many Palestinian filmmakers who have international careers have attended this institution. He still pursues this goal by training new generations of directors and never stops creating. Even during the corona lockdowns, he filmed neighbours in Diary of Gabrielle Street. He is currently post-producing his new feature film Passing Dreams.
In November 2023, Rashid founded the Masharawi Fund for films and filmmakers in Gaza, and the documentary From Ground Zero is their first project.
