Synopsis

A World Not Ours is an intimate, humorous portrait of three generations of exile in the refugee camp of Ain el-Helweh, in southern Lebanon. Based on a wealth of personal recordings, family archives, and historical footage, the film is a sensitive and illuminating study of belonging, friendship, and family.

The film was part of the Official Selection for the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival and won the Peace Film Prize. It has received over 30 awards including the Edinburgh, Yamagata and DOC NYC Grand Jury Prizes. Mahdi was named Best New Nordic Voice at Nordisk Panorama and received the New Talent Award at CPH:DOX in 2013.

THE DIRECTOR

Mahdi Fleifel is a Danish-Palestinian film director who graduated in 2009 from the UK National Film & TV School. He is the co-founder of London-based production company Nakba FilmWorks, which he runs alongside Irish producer Patrick Campbell.

Fleifel's critically acclaimed debut feature, A World Not Ours (2012), premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and picked up over 30 awards, including the 2013 Berlinale Peace Prize and the Edinburgh, Yamagata and DOC NYC Grand Jury Prizes. He was named Best New Nordic Voice at Nordisk Panorama, and received the New Talent Award at CPH:DOX in 2013.

Mahdi's 2016 film, A Man Returned, won the Silver Bear and the European Film Nomination at the Berlinale, and his follow up, A Drowning Man, was selected in the Official Competition at Cannes and was nominated for a BAFTA. I SIGNED THE PETITION won Best Documentary Short at IDFA and was nominated for the 2018 European Film Awards.

His fiction feature film debut, a co-production of the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece (Homemade Films), Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Palestine, To A Land Unknown, had its world premiere at the 2024 Quinzaine des Cinéastes in Cannes to rave reviews, and it is currently screening in festivals and theaters around the world.
