Pirates, Museums & Other Colonial Fictions
A talk by Amer Shomali
Presentation by and discussion with artist, filmmaker, and director of the Palestinian Museum, Amer Shomali عامر الشوملي, examining how museums, collections, and colonial narratives shape ideas of ownership, heritage, and cultural identity. Through examples of claimed and displaced objects, Shomali reflects on the politics of collecting and exhibiting, and on the role of museums in either reproducing or challenging colonial fictions. The discussion invites audiences to reconsider who has the authority to claim, preserve, interpret, and return cultural heritage.
Amer Shomali is a Palestinian conceptual artist, filmmaker, and Director of the Palestinian Museum. He is best known for the award-winning animated documentary 'The Wanted 18' and for using mixed media—such as lipsticks and wooden cubes—to address Palestinian sociopolitical issues. He holds degrees in architecture and animation and co-founded Zan Studio in Ramallah.
